The Kiwanis Club is a service club focused upon helping others and improving the quality of life in the community. Its members raise funds to support other organizations with their group objectives, particularly those benefiting youth. Kiwanis' mission is "Young Children Priority One". The Kiwanis Club of Welland has been in existence for over 50 years providing funds for the youth of Welland.
The WRCC has been providing stipends to community groups for five years now and over that time has delivered over $100,000 in community club support. All members of not-for-profit organizations are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity and register to volunteer. When signing up for an event or for the season, which can be done at www.canalcorp.ca, each volunteer is able to identify the community organization that will benefit from their commitment of time and volunteerism. This aspect the WIFC’s community legacy highlights one of its main principles of the Waterway: ‘We are inspired by our belief in the role the Welland Recreational Waterway can play in the quality of community life’, improving it and assisting in delivering opportunity.’
“We are pleased to continue working with the WRCC this upcoming season. Volunteerism strengthens a community and brings people together when they work towards common goals. The volunteer stipend program presents a great avenue to positively affect the community through multiple organizations, with multiple benefactors,” Heather Horton, President of the Kiwanis Club of Welland.
A presentation was made by the Kiwanis Club at the Welland International Flatwater Centre during the Welland Recreational Canal Corporation’s 2014 Volunteer Appreciation Night. “The WRCC is very pleased to see the Kiwanis Club of Welland assist in expanding this funding program. Service Clubs and community organizations are always looking for fundraising opportunities, this program delivers a way to give back and be rewarded at the same time,” suggested Stephen Fischer, Executive Director of the Flatwater Centre and WRCC.
Throughout the flatwater season’s events, there is an opportunity for organizations to take part in volunteering and these fundraising programs, depending on event size; organizations are invited to take advantage of the Welland Recreational Canal Corporation’s volunteer honorarium program by signing up to be a volunteer online.
