The Welland International Flatwater Centre (WIFC) will launch the Welland Indoor Paddle Tank Boarding Pass Program on February 6 from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm: a community-oriented initiative welcoming individuals of all ages and experience levels to participate in flatwater sports throughout the winter months for free.
This programming will occur every Friday night until April 10th, with the exception of April 3 (Good Friday). Each week, a different flatwater sport will be featured, allowing individuals to experience rowing, dragon boat, canoe and kayak free of charge. Upon their arrival to the WIFC, participants will be given their Welland Indoor Paddle Tank Boarding Pass, allowing them to 'check-in' to various flatwater sports, each time receiving a stamp to track their participation. The number of sessions the individual attends determines their prize at the end of the Boarding Pass Program. Prizes include clothing donated by the Canadian National Team and season's memberships to the Welland Canoe Rental Program.
With support from local clubs, the Boarding Pass sessions will be led by the Paddle Tank Program Manager Diana Hastings as well as Paddle Tank Program Consultant and Olympian Richard Dalton. "The Boarding Pass Program is a perfect opportunity for local residents to try out new and interesting sports in a cool new facility," states Richard Dalton. “Sports like Kayaking, Rowing, and Dragon Boat are great ways to have fun and get fit. I think this program provides a unique first introduction to these sports. After trying out the indoor facility, participants are going to be inspired to get active on the Waterway this summer."
Everyone is encouraged to come out from 6:30 pm till 8:00 pm, grab a paddle or an oar and give a flatwater sport a try! Whether you have stood on the podium at worlds, or have never been out on the water, individuals of all experience levels and all ages can participate in flatwater sports. Check-in to the WIFC on Fridays this winter!
